Oh dear, here we go again.
Dear Osman,
First, I cannot understand why you think it appropriate to send such a 'call for participation' to the PhD Design list. I cannot see how your call contributes in any way to discussion of PhD studies and related research. The list is not intended as an easily-accessible, rough-and-ready source of free, random volunteers for surveys tenuously connected to any design topic.
Second, it seems you have not read the recent discussion on another survey - the 'call for participation on international survey on design expertise' and related posts on Marketing Mail. If you had, you might have desisted from sending this one.
Third, yours is another example of very poorly designed, un-scientific survey work that does not match expectations of PhD work. Sample questions include asking for responses to "My boat is sensitively designed for my emotions", "Yacht interior should be as comfortable as a house", "I prefer highly decorated and glossy interiors". That hardly seems to constitute serious design studies; it's not even a serious marketing study. It is also not making any contribution to "human orientated" or "user centred design", as you claim, when it asks for responses to questions such as "Private areas for crew should be as small as possible" (although phrased in the survey as "as possible as small", so not even English has been checked) and "I don't want to see any crew member during sailing/anchored if not necessary". So the largest group of users, the crew/workers on the boat, are not only excluded from the survey, but regarded as a (necessary) nuisance.
Fourth, to return to the appropriateness of mailing this to the PhD Design list, my assumption would be that most subscribers to the list are PhD students and academics tutoring and supervising such research. I doubt that the great majority of them are "users" of mega-yachts (except perhaps as short-term crew), and certainly not the oligarch and billionaire mega-yacht owners to whom the survey is addressed.
Yours in sorrow,
Nigel Cross
