 Hi Jinan,

Thank you for the question, and thanks to Ali, Fernando and Terence for
their comments and suggestions. I am not against with any of the previous
comments however I should say that it is a wider topic than VARK
Questionnaire and the four styles as Visual, Auditory, Reading,
Kinesthetic.

Unfortunately (or fortunately!) "learning styles" is used widely by various
researchers in different manners. In that sense, even educationalists don't
have a consensus on the topic. So it is not wrong to say that there are
seperate ecoles in educational studies. For that reason "Learning Styles"
is still an ambiguous topic.

One of the most popular studies on learning styles is *Experiential
Learning Theory (ELT) *by David Kolb

https://www.learning-theories.com/experiential-learning-kolb.html

David Kolb defines learning as a cycle with four basic learning modes as
the bipolar dimensions of two continuums defined as *perception* and
*processing.
*According to ELT there are four main learning styles as *Accommodating* *,
Diverging, Assimilating *and *Converging*, but later Kolb extended the
definition of learning styles by also defining the overlaps of two
neighbour styles on the learning style type grid. According to the recent
version of the theory there are 9 learning dispositions/tendencies.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/302350841_Experiential_Learning_Spiral

According to ELT none of the learning styles are better or worst than
other, each has its own pros and cons. Even it is possible to see different
learning tendencies of the same individual during diffrent actions in a
daily routine. It is also possible to have a shift in the learning style of
any individual in time thorugh experience.

I have been studying design education through ELT since early 2000s and we
have published several articles with my colleague Prof. Dr. Halime Demirkan
on the topic. Below please find the reference information of some of our
printed articles. The main idea is considering Kolb's ELT through Donald
Schon's reflective practice model. So rather than trying to figure out what
is the learning styles of design students/designers we have tried to
understand how learning styles work through the experince of design
learning.

Demirbas, O.O. and Demirkan, H. (2003) "Focus on architectural design
process through learning styles" *Design Studies, *24: 437-456.

Demirbas, O.O. and Demirkan, H. (2007) "Learning styles of design students
and the relationship of academic performance and gender in design
education" *Learning and Instruction, *17: 345-359.

Demirkan, H. and Demirbas, O.O. (2008) "Focus on the learning styles of
freshman design students" *Design Studies, *29: 254-266.

Demirkan, H. (2016) "An inquiry into the learning-style and
knowledge-building preferences of interior architecture students" *Design
Studies*, 44: 28-51

Eventually, I am questionning the consideration of learning styles as a
myth for design education. I hope this information is useful. I would like
to share a famous quote of David Kolb; “Learning is the process whereby
knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Knowledge
results from the combination of grasping experience and transforming it”. I
find this statement quite powerful since *experience *is one of the
critical phenomenon of design education.

Kind Regards,
O. Osman Demirbas, PhD
