Hello colleagues— As a faculty member who teaches “design” within a business school context I have greatly enjoyed this on-going conversation and found it highly informative (I have gleaned several good readings from your comments). In particular I find Dr. Herriott’s working definition very interesting:
"Design is an activity aimed at conceiving new or revised products which a) meet a need or solve a problem and b) are formed in a manner such that they have at least a minimum level of aesthetic appeal.”
My question is whether the field of “design” would consider the second element— the aesthetic appeal of an offering— as sometimes also meeting the needs or solving a problem for their users? (and thereby being subsumed into the first)
In my area of Marketing I believe we would argue that a beautiful product provides symbolic or emotional value that itself may address the wants and needs of a consumer. For example, perhaps I perceive that an aesthetically appealing t-shit with the logo of my favorite band printed on it says something about me thereby addressing my need to communicate my individuality or my problem to successfully signal my appreciation of that specific band as well as my sophisticated and refined taste in music to others… Does this meet the threshold of a “design” solving a problem for a user?
Thank you!

I have got the problem solving bit in, the aesthetic bit in and have excluded planners and engineers and artists. What is the minimum level of aesthetic appeal? I need a new sentence for that. But perhaps the word "appeal" is a good test.
I wanted to use Mads Nygaard Folkmann´s concept of "surplus of meaning" but I could not get it to fit into a snappy definition.

Dear all,
I've just finished writing an essay in which I used the following definition of design; I admit it's somewhat awkwardly phrased, but for what it's worth:
"Design is the form of human intelligence (materialised in a set of
disciplines) that creates the artefacts that shape the artificial world in which people live."
This definition presupposes a broad understanding of artefact to include non-material creations.
All the best,
