Job description
This position entails 1) tasks as Lecturer in Design Literacy, and 2)
additional support tasks for Design Research. Both are detailed below.

1) We are seeking a Lecturer to lead the Literacy track, as well as teach
the foundational course “Design Literacy.” We are hiring a colleague with a
strong expertise in teaching design processes, as well as a critical
perspective on Design Thinking. The Lecturer in Design Literacy is a
central figure of the Master’s programme, and is responsible for:
- revising/updating the syllabus for Design Literacy (one of the four
foundational classes at the M.Sc. Digital Design);
- teaching the Design Literacy course;
- coordinating the Literacy track, e.g. organizing intensive workshops,
inviting guest-speakers, and establishing and maintaining international
connections;
- promoting students’ work outside the programme, e.g. writing and
publishing research papers with students and colleagues, or actively
attending professional networking events;
- contributing to the public communications of the programme with regular
blog posts on http://masterdigitaldesign.com, as well as facilitating
students’ contributions;
- participating in students’ assessments and admissions.

2) We are also seeking a Support Lecturer who will work closely together
with the other lecturers in the Master’s programme - especially with the
Lecturer in Design Research. At the moment, the Design Research course
spans across the three approaches to constructive design research (Lab,
Field, and Showroom), and we are looking for an enthusiastic colleague with
expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative design research
The primary functions of the Support Lecturer are:
- support the Core Lecturer in Design Research in formative and summative
assessments;
- develop original lessons plans and teach independently in the Research
track (e.g. intensive workshops, field-sessions…);

We are seeking a colleague with the proven capacity of enabling design
students to perform in teams, with clients, in a well-defined process.
Experience with Research through Design and Action Research is a plus, as
well as experience in design industry. Applicants with a Ph.D. degree, or
close to defending, will be given priority. Those with Master’s degrees and
significant industry experience are also acceptable, especially if they are
willing to obtain a Ph.D. or PDD/PDEng in the near future. Demonstrable
teaching experience, especially at the graduate level, is essential. The
Lecturer in Design Literacy will be able to work in interdisciplinary teams
and with students from a variety of disciplinary/cultural backgrounds. The
ability to effectively teach in English is required.

The Master in Digital Design programme brings together practice, research,
and technological innovation. The 1-year full time curriculum combines a
rigorous background in design research (‘Research through Design’, ‘Action
Research’) with real-world projects involving industry partners carried out
in a studio setting. It is designed to challenge students, and prepare them
for the real-life rhythms of design professionals. The programme centres
around four main areas of expertise: Literacy, Research, Creation and
Strategy. It is completely taught in English, to a multicultural cohort of
24 students. This year our students already submitted papers to NordiCHI,
CHI Play, RtD Conf, and Games for Health.

The M.Sc. Digital Design is an initiative of the Amsterdam University of
Applied Sciences, in cooperation with nine leading Dutch digital agencies
(ACHTUNG!, DDB Tribal, FHV BBDO, Fabrique, MediaMonks, Mirabeau, Momkai,
TamTam, and Woedend!) and a network of key partners (for 2017/18: World
Wildlife Fund (WWF), VodafoneZiggo, ANWB, Informaat and DigitasLBi).

The initial period of employment is one year with the possibility of an
extension. The tasks belong to the job description of teacher / researcher
2 (docent / onderzoeker 2). The pay scale complies with pay scale 11 (CAO
HBO labour agreement for universities of applied sciences). The maximum
salary is €4.661,- and depends on education and experience.

The AUAS offers an extensive package of employee benefits, including a
generous holiday allowance and payment of a 13th month. Via the AUAS
Academy, the AUAS also offers excellent opportunities for study and
personal development and encourages employees to continue their
professional education. Lecturers must hold a teaching certificate, or must
be willing to obtain one within a set period. The AUAS is willing to pay
for the teaching certificate course.
