*VACANCY: Research Associates x2 (/Past and Present Musical Encounters
across the Strait of Gibraltar/) *
The Faculty of Music is seeking two Postdoctoral Research Associates to
work with Dr Matthew Machin-Autenrieth on the ERC-funded project 'Past
and Present Musical Encounters across the Strait of Gibraltar'.
The project explores how a collective European-North African cultural
memory has been articulated through music for different sociopolitical
ends in colonial and postcolonial contexts. Music has been employed as a
means of social control and representation during French and Spanish
colonialism in North Africa in the twentieth century, and as a model for
multiculturalism and cultural diplomacy among North African communities
in Europe today. The project analyses how modern-day practices of
musical exchange in the region are shaped by discourses and networks
formed during colonialism. It brings together different geographical,
linguistic and musical specialisms, leading towards an integrated
understanding of musical exchange in the region.
Applicants will have a Ph.D. in music or related fields (e.g.
anthropology, cultural studies/history, sociology) and a developing
profile of publications. They will be able to manage a wide range of
activities and to exercise judgment regarding the prioritising of
workload. They will be highly attentive to detail and capable of
resolving sophisticated conceptual problems relevant to the project.
They will be able to work independently and to communicate effectively
with a wide range of individuals. Appointees will be expected to work
towards a monograph and collaborative research outputs in one or more of
the following areas:
1. Music and colonialism in the Maghreb, focusing on the French and
Spanish Protectorates in Morocco (1912-56) and potentially another
comparative case study in Algeria and/or Tunisia
2. Postcolonial musical encounters between the Maghreb and the former
metropoles of France and Spain
Relevant theoretical approaches in (ethno)musicology, postcolonial
studies and multiculturalism studies.
2. Please note that this is a 100% research position and as such the
Faculty cannot offer any teaching opportunities that are not part of the
project.
Interviews will be held w/c 13 August 2018.
