Dear all,
Just a quick reminder that the deadline for expressing an interest in attending the SMA Formal Theory Study Group (FTSG) is tomorrow (11 May).
Copied below the original notice regarding our first two reading group sessions:
Following the development of the ‘new Formenlehre’ in the recent decades, we are organising an SMA Formal Theory Study Group (FTSG) with the aim to create a platform for postgraduates and early-career scholars working on different aspects of musical form to interact and exchange ideas. The FTSG seeks to promote stimulating discussions among researchers through various activities such as reading groups, writing clubs and workshops, and it hopes to incorporate all possible approaches to musical form, including perspectives from other disciplines such as history and philosophy. In view of its official inauguration at the SMA Summer School, we are running two preliminary reading-group sessions at Durham University. Details are as follows:
1) 26 May (Sat) 2-3pm. Set Text: MacKay, James S. 2017. “A Case for Declassifying the IAC as a Cadence Type: Cadence and Thematic Design in Selected Early- to Middle-Period Haydn Sonatas.” Ad Parnassum 15 (30): 1-27.
2) 16 June (Sat) 2-3pm. Set Text: Horton, Julian. 2017. “Formal Type and Formal Function in the Postclassical Piano Concerto.” In Formal Function in Perspective: Essays on Musical Form from Haydn to Adorno, edited by Steven Vande Moortele, Julie Pedneault-Deslauriers, and Nathan John Martin, 77-122. Rochester, NY: University of Rochester Press.
If you are interested, please email [log in to unmask] with your name, contact email, affiliation and the session(s) you would like to attend by 11 May 2018. It is not compulsory to attend both sessions in order to participate in the reading group, but you are very much encouraged to do so. Virtual attendance by Skype or other virtual means is also welcomed especially for participants living far from Durham. Please specify in your email if you wish to participate via virtual means so that we can make the arrangements accordingly. That said, you are warmly invited to attend in person especially if you are based in the north. Not only would we love to meet you in person, but also Durham is not a bad place for a day trip!
A number of travel bursaries are available for SMA members if you wish to attend in person, please contact SMA’s Administrator, Rebecca Day, at [log in to unmask] for more details.
Please email us at [log in to unmask] should you have any enquiries. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
FTSG Organising Committee
