I've also been using Nunan's What Is This Thing Called Language? (Macmillan) in a master's course for preservice teachers in both language teaching and other content areas. It's very accessible and well written. I have a few quibbles with some claims, but that's ok. The course has a really broad scope and this is a good foundation for understanding some foundational linguistic concepts.

    Hi Rob,

How English Works by Curzan & Adams is excellent, and my students, most of whom are English ed majors, find it approachable, clear, easy to understand, and engaing. I also like the way the authors weave in examples of variation, change, and other "real life" kinds of language use within the chapters. The book includes exercises (although I supplement these since they don't provide as much practice as my students need) and a teaching manual that includes class activities, answer keys to the exercises, and added information for lectures. The one drawback to the textbook is the cost--at over $100, it's not very affordable for most students unless they rent it, and then they don't have access to it for future courses or their own future teaching.

    All my best,

    Kate

There are linguistics textbooks that are specifically targeted for teacher education such as

    The Educator's Guide to Linguistics

Also, the second edition of the book What Teachers Need to Know about Language was just recently released:

    https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.cal.org_resource-2Dcenter_publications_what-2Dteachers-2Dneed2&d=DwIFaQ&c=kbmfwr1Yojg42sGEpaQh5ofMHBeTl9EI2eaqQZhHbOU&r=_rMj7-Pgoc9IWqUnTVAZ6aLZ1r8V9PaRLjSW-DQVx4E&m=FwP8SHfyaocAYwRDpJ8TEvWupFiYhNohJziMe6Z3XVc&s=66QzcdXq3l9lWnHiE6G-W0GYu69ac0fz-XBFrJxajng&e=

The book helps teachers understand how the study of language and linguistics relates to teaching. It would make a good companion to a linguistics textbook to help pre-service teachers grasp the relevance and application of language and linguistics to education.

In preparing to teach linguistics to pre-service teachers, I would also recommend having a look at this text by Dick Hudson:

Hudson, R. (2008). Linguistic theory. In B. Spolsky & F.M. Hult (Eds.), Handbook of educational linguistics. Malden, MA: Wiley-Blackwell.

It is a useful discussion about the relevance of linguistics for teaching and learning. It can help one contextualize the content for a (pre-service) teacher audience, especially if one is used to teaching linguistics majors who are interested in the content for its own sake.

There was also a good book edited back in the 80s that delves further into why linguistics is useful for teachers, which would also be good background reading for preparing to teach linguistics to teachers:

Carter, R. (Ed.)(1982). Linguistics and the teacher. New York: Routledge.

More recently, for those working with UG, this book might also be of interest:

Whong, M., Gil, K., & Marsden, H. (Eds.)(2013). Universal grammar and the second language classroom. New York: Springer.
