With due respect to all the good and thoughtful people who are engineers, the engineering mentality can be commonly destructive. I am aware through dialogue with scientists that their engineer colleagues are unimpressed with talking and discussion and like to "just get on with it". What bad science, bad design and bad engineering involve is a lack of the ethical dimension. "Just getting on with it" is a way of discounting the human element in a problem.
I wonder if there are engineering courses dealing with the limits of engineering thinking as in how to spot when an engineering problem is really a wicked problem badly handled or when there are ethical reasons for not doing the work as asked e.g. to be asked to engineer a land mine.

'Science, when used for evil purposes, is still Science'
This is an interesting observation.
I have always wondered how to explain the cultural degeneration as there is no word for that in English.
In Sanskrit, there are two words to distinguish this, which are 'Sanskriti'
and 'Vikriti'. The later is to denote the degeneration.
In my talks/ writings, I have been using the term 'engineere' to talk about the present 'culture' which is a result of thought/ knowledge engineering and mind control.
And also for 'creativity', I have been using the word 'destructivity'. Most modern 'creativity' will fall under the latter category as it is not for existential reasons but often for mere profit.
When profit is the main motif then truth takes a backseat.
