Hi folks,
I've long used internet based resources like
http://soundsofspeech.uiowa.edu/index.html#english and
http://www.yorku.ca/earmstro/ipa to illustrate the IPA, as well as stuff like
https://r12a.github.io/pickers/ipa/ and (cheat mode!) http://tophonetics.com/ for
transcription. But I've only just found a free phone app that does the trick in a way
that not only matches sounds to symbols but also shows the articulators moving. It's
called AV Phonetics.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hkbu.ulip.avphonetics
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/av-phonetics/id1022721561?mt=8
It seems to have been out since 2015 but passed me by in that time. Anyway it's been
steadily developed in that time and now seems very stable and clear.
(The above linked 'Sounds of Speech' site also has an app, but that's not free, so
this is a welcome addition.)
I'll try to report back after I've got my first year undergrads using it. Hope it helps!
Dave
