Don—You’re right about the 1-2-3-4-5 order not always being neat. The process can be a series of loops rather than a neat line. I always say that a version of the stages (which might be referred to as ideation-evaluation-refinement) gets described as how the object/artifact part of graphic design gets done. It’s not that the description is an accurate description of how we work. We say it because it’s the usual description of how/when we get paid by a client.
