Thanks for sharing. Just a minor correction, the standard states that the annual average temperature should be less than 18°C.
Thanks
Lindsey

Dear Catherine, Meic et al.
I don't have the final document in my possession however I have the circulated draft, which I would assume was not substantively modified and am happy to share the details I have on climate variance.
For traditional mixed archives the ranges are 22-13 °C and 60-35% RH. The doc specifies new storage rooms should be constructed in such a way as to minimize temperature variance to 1°C in a 24h period, and that the annual average temperature should not fall below 18°C. Below is the key passage I can locate re. climate variance over time:
Gradual change in the RH and temperature from the upper limit to the lower limit (or vice versa) given in 5.1, for example as a result of seasonal change, may be considered acceptable if it occurs over a period of a month or more. Even a gradual change of this extent that occurs over a single week in response to weather changes, for example in an historic building with low thermal inertia, can be safe for archives, especially if they are packaged. However a continuous weekly cycle up and down the ranges will cause a gradually increased rate of deterioration of most archival materials when compared with this rate of change in a very stable environment. While it is preferable to maintain a stable annual average by means of design of the collection space and building structure, it is also safe to allow seasonal movements in RH and temperature in order to improve energy economy, as long as the conditions remain within the ranges given in 5.1.
Kind Regards,
Adam

Subject: BS 4971
Hello
I am currently undergoing a detailed ISO9001:2015 audit. As part of this my auditor is keen to understand in great depth TNA Accreditation (which we achieved in November 2016) and the differences between PD5454:2012 and BS 4971.
As I remember in the move from BS5454:2000 to PD5454:2012 one key change was that some of the temperature and humidity parameters were broadened to allow for seasonal change in repositories so long as this was gradual. What I don't know is if BS4971 reversed this or continued the trend although I have seen an indication of it moving more towards required outcomes than precise environmental conditions.
I will try to obtain a copy of BS4971 but like all British Standards it is rather expensive and I don't have a budget for that until at least the new FY.
Would any members be willing to give me an idea of whether there are any key changes in BS4971 that I should have been aware of and any general theme - such as moving from specific parameters to desired outcomes.
Many thanks for any help you can give me!
Catherine
