Have you looked at the ISKO (International Society of Knowledge Organisers) stuff?

Subject: Functional cataloguing query
Good morning all,
Working in a specialist repository I've found that in most of the personal collections the same activities appear time and again. With this in mind I am developing a functional classification for personal collections to both promote consistency, and to allow us to make in-demand sections of collections available quickly without needing to produce a full bespoke catalogue (which we currently just don't have the resource to do).
Within the collections I work in there are naturally some specialist functions relating to the subject area, but there are also functions/areas of activity which I assume must occur in personal collections other repositories - e.g. education, employment, promotion of the individual's area of interest, reference works relating to the individual's area of interest etc.
I assume I'm not the first to have this idea so I'd love to hear from anyone who has functional classifications or standard structures for cataloguing personal collections - and any pros and cons with this approach.
Happy to summarise for the list if desired.
Many thanks for any information.
