Dear Martin,
I don't have anything against practice-led doctorates. And I also do
believe that any applied/professional field (including engineering,
education, nursing, business, design , etc.) needs them along with
traditional PhDs. (I did not invent the term applied/professional field, it
is commonly used in education research and sociology of higher education).
It seems like everything boils down to the difference between daily (sorry
I could not find a better word for this) practice and practice led-research
--and this issue comes to the fore time and again in this list and in many
other venues.Higher education institutions cannot grant doctorates to every
engineer or designer or inventor that "designs" something (and more often
than not these activities involve some form of research). So far , despite
many many good examples, our small community has not been able to settle on
a set of more or less clear criteria to assess practice-led research
activity (at least in my humble opinion). I do not want to open a can of
worms, but it seems like without discussing this problem (again) we will
not be able to go further.
Sincerely,
ali o. ilhan
