Dear Amaltas, Osman and Ken
This is an interesting area that I have to deal with all the time with corporate clients and design students. I wrote and published a short paper recently called "In search of Innovation, Creativity and Change" which tries to go some way to understanding both the relationship and differences within a design context. This was developed from some earlier work "Can Changes to Product Behaviour Alter Consumer Behaviour?" where I wanted to analyse the relationship between the conceptual artefact (designed product behaviour) and that of the potential user (consumer behaviour).
Amaltas if you or anyone else is interested or feel it may be useful with regards to your question about the difference between Design and Innovation I would be happy to pass on a copy.
Regards
Philip

Subject: Re: Difference between 'design' and 'innovation'
Dear Amaltas,
You have brought up a very nice and critical issue. Although at first glance, it seems to be easy to define and differentiate these two, it is not that much easy when you try it. Besides any definition should not be offhand but should be done very carefully. Generally, I am not commenting on any of the subjects on this list but prefer to read and follow. However, this time I would like to say a little about your question not to answer or comment what you have asked but possibly to extend the discussion.
First of all, I do believe that in order to find a way to answer this challenging question we should go out of our disciplinary boundaries and consider both of the terms/concepts in a more general and global perspective. Unfortunataly, the term "design" itself can refer to a lot of different meanings accordingly with the depicter's background and/or vision. In this sense, it is not very different than the term "innovation".
After all, these discussions turn to be very *rhetoric* rather than rational and constructive. It is for sure that both of the terms should be bounded with each other with strong relations and most probably need each other to exist. Sometimes I am thinking that the relationship between design and innovation is like egg and chicken; they desperatly need each other, but you can never know which is first or after.
However when we look at the practical part of the real action we could say that not all design activity necessarily be innovative or an innovation is not necessarily be a design all the time. It might be a good practice to consider the verb form of each term as "to design" and "to innovate".
Say, allocating the pieces of an electronic board is generally named as designing the board in engineering however it is not necessarily be an innovative practice. Merely whenever the engineer finds a new combination that could do the same job with less energy, double performance, in a more sustainable way etc. it might turned to be an innovation. Sometimes this is just in the level of an idea/theory. Generally in order to turn the new theory into reality there is the need of design action.
Turning back to my point, as saying that most of the definitions and discussions on the matter are too *rhetoric, *what is the possible ways of bringing out more rational and constructive definitions?
