Some additional thoughts:
A Class of Proposals
From a design thinking perspective, the many interesting suggestions are all generated from a point of view of particular interest to the proposer. And each sets up a system that has its own special implications, both social, economic and physical.
A System for Deciding.
Design thinking would also have us recognize that the future of libraries depends on some process for settling on a point of view and a process for deciding. Who gets to decide makes all the difference.
Short-term Long-term
Identifying strategies for thinking, such as short-term solutions to known problems and needs vs. longer-term transformations that relate the university library to an evolving university’s social and educational mission.
Generating Possibilities:
Design thinking would also do what you’re doing to stimulate thought about the issue and generate a lot of possibilities.

If I recall correctly, one of the main characters is an indexer in the Foundation library, which has an interesting disruptive element to trigger creativity of connections—the physical environment of her office in the library changes each day.
