Ken,
Thanks for your comments. I think Don has summed up the situation well and I have nothing to add but I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Elizabeth Guffey for her work building 'Design and Culture' and to the many people whose (largely uncompensated--but if they were getting rich, I’d still thank them) work has moved us forward.
I’m hesitant to start listing people because, like actors at the Academy Awards, I can keep listing people until they play music and cut to a commercial or I can cut it short myself and insult people by omission.
I think anyone who reads this list regularly knows of Ken’s efforts with 'She Ji’ and elsewhere but there are many contributors to this list who are also major contributors to our communal advances.
’Design and Culture’ is the most visible part of the Design Studies Forum for most people but the group has, among other things, made the College Art Association here in the US notice that design exists. Carma Gorman is an occasional contributor here and is one the several people whose efforts are paying off for the rest of us.
The gang from 'Design Issues' used to be more active on this list but thanks to them. We don’t hear enough from Michael Gibson or the other forces behind AIGA’s 'Dialectic,' but they have managed to create an interesting new journal and put out several issues. Michael Zender, editor of 'Visible Language' posts here. . . [Speaking of Mike, thanks to Gjoko and everybody at U Cincinnati and IASDR for all the work on the recent conference and to everyone who keeps the organizations and conferences moving.]
Like I said, it was probably a mistake to name anyone because I will think of more as soon as I hit "send" and will have forgotten many more. But as the Northern Hemisphere fall semester wraps up and the Southern Hemisphere summer break looms, I wanted to thank everyone for their (often uncompensated) work. Just because we don’t say something, that doesn’t mean we don’t notice.
