Panopto's automatic captioning isn't terribly accurate. I came across
two groups at my last employer who had been told it was "amazing". We
asked them to actually test it on real content and they came back to us
with an "errr, yeah... not great".

Panopto will caption the content properly for between $2 and $4 per
audio minute depending on how quickly you want it but you have to buy
bulk loads of minutes in advance and it's complicated to organise.

Speech to text software levels of accuracy is not good enough for deaf
students. Even Youtube which is the best I've seen isn't good enough -
deaf people call those "craptions". It isn't just accuracy of words, it
is capitalisation and puntuation and the timing which all affect
'readability'. One of the worst things about Craptions is that they come
one word at a time and even very good ones are inaccurate in confusing
ways which can completely change the meaning.

There needs to be some degree of human tidying up to make even the best
automated captions reliable enough for real deaf user use.

I am a strong believer that captions must be proper to be any use to
deaf students, anything else isn't good enough. Deaf organisations
consistently agree.
