Dear All,
please forward this job announcement to motivated students. Thank you!
TWO PHD POSITIONS IN STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY / GEOMECHANICS
We are looking for two motivated PhD students to work on research
projects funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and
Energy (BMWi).
One PhD project deals with the set-up of a crustal-scale structural
model of Germany which will then be transformed to a
geomechanical-numerical simulation to investigate spatial variations in
stress orientation as well as stress magnitude. This work will be
carried out in cooperation with our project partners from Karlsruhe
Institute of Technology (KIT) and GFZ German Research Centre for
Geosciences. Special focus of the PhD student at Technische Universität
Darmstadt will be on the basement structures so a good knowledge of the
regional geology of Central Europe is essential.

The other PhD project focuses on the development and application of
methodologies to upscale hydraulic and mechanical rock parameters from
the lab and outcrop scale to the scale of numerical reservoir models
with cell sizes typically in the range of 10th to 100th of meters. This
work is part of a larger project involving four other German research
institutions.

Qualified candidates must have a M.Sc. or equivalent degree in geology
or geophysics. A strong background in structural geology, rock
mechanics, and/or numerical modeling is required. Good communication and
computing skills are essential.
Both PhD positions are funded for three years. Salary level and benefits
are equivalent to 75% TV 13 (TV - TU Darmstadt). The Technical
University Darmstadt aims at increasing the number of women in science
and therefore explicitly encourages applications from female candidates.
Disabled persons will be given preference in case of equal qualification.
Applications must include a CV, grade transcripts, and a cover letter
stating research interests and motivation for applying. Please submit
your application (combined in one pdf document) in electronic format to
Mrs. Stefanie Kollmann, Institute of Applied Geoscience, Germany (email:
[log in to unmask]). Evaluation of applications will start on
January 22, 2018 and continues until the positions are filled. The
expected starting dates are March 1, 2018 for the first and April 1,
2018 for the second PhD project.
For further information regarding the PhD positions please contact Prof.
Dr. Andreas Henk (email: [log in to unmask]) or Dr. Karsten Reiter
(email: [log in to unmask]).
Viele Grüße / Best regards
Karsten Reiter
