Hello, Dave, this isn’t really my area but for Down Syndrome and language (including wider issues having to do with bilingualism and cognitive disabilities), my ‘go-to’ source in the first instance is Jean Rondal, now emeritus at the University of Liège. There’s a bibliography (mostly in French) at http://orbi.ulg.ac.be/ph-search?uid=u006062 and there’s his Academia.edu page at https://independent.academia.edu/JeanRondal (many more references in English): should turn up some leads of interest.
Best wishes,
Jeff

Hi TeachLingers,
One of my dissertation students is interested in researching primary school aged
children with Downs syndrome. She specifically wants to explore how they articulate
their sense of self - talking about themselves distinct from other people, their own
personality, their own physicality, etc.
She's been looking at various bits of prior research, and I've tried to help, but
this isn't my area and progress is slow. Various bits of psychological research have
come up, but the linguistic stuff is mostly focused on more conventional language
acquisition, nothing on this idea of sense of self.
Apologies if this is a little bit vague, but does anyone have any tips for research
in this area?
Thanks folks!
Dave

Dave,
Sense of self and sense of selfness are areas I'm working on at present. I also presented a BA module last year on language effects caused by cognitive disabilities, one of which was Down syndrome - although I didn't address selfhood directly. It sounds like an interesting project. If you want, put your student in touch with me; if you would prefer to act as intermediary, let me know and I'll send you what I can.
