Dear All
Just a few quick thoughts about "future-readines"
I've been hearing this phrase, "future-ready" being bounced about in almost all meetings and magazines etc this year
Seems like there is a trend to think about future-ready this and that, and in relation to those, being future ready in our Designs to cope with these futures
The notion seems to be a kind of economic projection of what markets point to in 5, 10, etc years and how we ought to be ready vis Designing for these futurings
Still I wonder if at some point it would be useful to resurrect a kind of Hegelian or Fukuyama's notion of history (ot exactly these but something similar), and hence of a related notion of the end or future of history... in this sense, it is possible to move into tomorrow in time and yet regress into the past, rather than move in the direction of the future or the end of history...
This would open the space for a designing that is driven and guided and steered by a more robust philosophy of design, alongside the interest in pacifying the market.
Perhaps you've written something along these lines and I would be very interest in it.
Indeed It would seem that the notion of a future I am alluding to is a sense which is possibly more important to think about.
Imagine a frustrated lady who upon dating a man who merely plans for future dates without mentioning marriage or even evades it - she might lament that they have lots of time, but maybe between them there is no "future" - this suggests that the future that needs to be thought is not so much a mere projection of what will happen in chronological time, but rather the presence or absence of the teleological culmination of the present series of actions, even something along the lines of fulfilment...
