Dear all,
I have found a circular anomaly in a mesolithic femur from Cervus elaphus. The anomaly is ca. 8 mm in diameter and shows a circumferential ring-structure. It is clearly separated from the surrounding joint surface by a small gap. My first idea was that it could be an embedded piece of wood as the preservation conditions at the archaeological site are excellent for organic material. However, MicroCT-Scanning showed that the anomaly is only superficial and it looks like it is part of the original bone tissue.

I have not seen any pathology resembling the finding so far but in the light of MicroCT-Scanning, it cannot be excluded.
I would very much appreciate any ideas that can help to explain the structure.
Thank you very much!
