Performance Studies Network Conference, 5-8 July 2018, at the Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo, Norway.

The Call for Papers is open. Deadline: 15:00 Central European Time (CET) on Monday 30 October 2017.

Conference website: psn2018.org

Proposals are submitted via the Conference website.

Proposals are invited for individual papers, research reports and special sessions on any subject in the field of musical performance studies, addressing as wide a variety of topics and methodologies as possible, including (but not limited to):

- Creative processes in performance: composed/improvised/memorised traditions

- Perspectives on performance: from composers/performers/listeners and including historical, analytical, psychological, pedagogical and philosophical viewpoints

- Modes of performance: Notated/recorded/live music including embodied and gestural approaches, the role of technology in experimentation, auditory streaming, visual music, multimedia, social media, intertextuality and intermediality

- Contexts for performance: performer/audience relationships, community music, music and familiarity, people and places

Proposals addressing any of these strands, singly or in combination, are especially welcome but the committee will also consider submissions dealing with any aspect of performance studies as it pertains to music.

In addition, the committee invites proposals that harmonise with the following special theme:

- ‘Lebensmelodien’: A developmental project and performance presentation devoted to novel approaches to Schubert Lieder will be carried out over the course of the Conference.

Duration of presentations

- Individual papers: 30 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. These presentations should deal in depth with a specific issue related to the conference themes or to the performance studies field more generally.

- Research reports: 10 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. These presentations present an outline of a research process with a proportionately generous allocation of time for questions, creating a good arena for the showcasing of “work-in-progress”.

- Special sessions: 80 minutes in total, including discussion. These sessions generally involve several presenters and may explore the findings of research groups, organisational research trajectories or any relevant subject that lends itself to group presentation and discussion.

Proposals

All proposals (abstracts) should describe the topic of the presentation fully and clearly and should include the following information:

- Background
- Research questions
- Aims
- Summary of content
- Significance

For individual papers and research reports, a proposal of c. 500 words should be submitted; in the case of special sessions, the proposal should be c. 1,000 words. Please indicate whether or not the presentation will involve live performance and, if so, which instruments and repertoires are envisaged.

No names or other identifying information should appear on proposals for individual papers or research reports. In contrast, the names of all intended participants in special sessions should be stated.

Technical requirements

When you submit your proposal you will be asked to identify:

- Type of submission (i.e. individual paper, research report, special session)
- AV requirements (Mac or PC, sound, projection)
- Special requests for space/equipment for performance during the paper/session

The following AV facilities will be available in all of the NMH conference rooms:

- Speaker microphones: Microphone on the lectern, 2 handheld wireless microphones, 2 headset microphones
- Image projection: Built-in tower PC, VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, document camera (on request), blu-ray-/dvd-/cd-player
- Sound projection: Built-in tower PC, mini jack, HDMI, blu-ray-/dvd-/cd-player
- Internet (cable and wireless network)
- 1 socket outlet

Grand pianos available:

- Levin Hall: 2 x Steinway C
- Lindeman Hall: 2 x Steinway D
- A Yamaha C7 is available in each hall if preparation of the instrument is necessary.

Deadline

Proposals should be submitted via the submission form on the conference website by 15:00 Central European Time (CET) on Monday 30 October 2017. Late proposals will not be accepted.
