medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Bill,
Jerome's first translation or revised Latin text of the OT was based primarily on the Septuagint (in Origen's Hexapla), not yet on the Hebrew. The full text is preserved only for the book of Job and for the Psalter. The wording of your quotation is taken from this earlier translation of Job 6,30 iuxta LXX, see C. P. Caspari, Das Buch Hiob (1,1 - 38,16) in Hieronymus's Übersetzung aus der alexandrinischen Version nach einer St. Gallener Handschrift saec. VIII, Christiana (Denmark) 1893, p. 59:
"non est enim in ore meo iniquitas, et fauces meae, nonne sapientiam meditantur?" [var. meditabantur]
As opposed to the translation iuxta Hebr.(earlier quoted by Martin Wallace), which came to be the standard text of the Vulgate:
"et non invenietis in lingua mea iniquitatem nec in faucibus meis stultitia personabit"
