Dear Don,

You are kind and gentle :-)

To add to your suggestion for to use lmgtfy ; Eric Raymond wrote a detailed approach to help students (and others) learn to ask good questions.

It's here and a good read and would be even better if there were examples from PhD study:

Best wishes,
Terry

Subject: circular economy and LMGTFY, a marvelous teaching tool

For those of you -- like me -- who had no idea of what a "circular economy"
meant

Herre is the answer

But first: A marvelous teaching, instructional, and just plain useful tool.
A brilliant innovation in human-computer interaction and learning by doing.

I get an amazing number of people asking me a lot of questions. They come in three basic types.

   1. Quick, I'm a 3rd-year student at Xanadosh university, what should I
   do my final project on?
   2. I think you are wrong in distinguishing between affordances and
signifiers because, in the physical world, they cannot be separated
   3. Can you tell me what "circular economy" means?

Questions of type 1 I try to gently discard. Sometimes I am not gentle. (I have no idea what or where Xanadosh university is, I have no idea who you are and what you are studying, and final projects should be something you chose, something you care about. Anyway, that is what your professors are for - to answer these questions

Questions of type 2 are wonderful. I try to answer, and often in the ensuing emails I both enjoy the discussion and learn things.

Questions of type 3 are simply annoying. I often have to Google the answer myself. I then gently (or not, depending upon how much sleep I had the night before) try to explain to the person how to find the answer all by themselves.

Well, some very clever people have solved that Type 3 problem for me.

The program and the website are called "Let Me Google That For You":
lmgtfy.com . Written by people who continually got asked questions that the questioner could simply have searched for themselves.

So if someone emails you asking, what does "circular economy" mean, just mail them back the URL below (you can make the search for anything you wish and select what search engine or website to use to get the answer).

The result not only gives the answer, it very cleverly suggests that, hey, here is how to do it by yourself.

so, please go to

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Circular+Economy

It is a wonderful teaching tool. And a learning one as well.

Don
