The Eastern Pathology Alliance is a Hub and Spoke Network encompassing the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (Hub), the spokes James Paget University Hospital and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn.
The service comprises Clinical Biochemistry, Immunology, Endocrinology, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Microbiology, Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics, collectively known as Laboratory Medicine.
The Clinical Biochemistry service, which is provided for the network is via a Hub and spoke model with the majority of work centralised at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital in a state of the art laboratory on the main site completed in 2005 and re-equipped on the formation of the network in 2013. The service is provided for all 3 Trusts within the Network, for 5 Clinical Commissioning groups (CCGs) and Community services, covering a population of just over 1 million.
The Department currently has the largest workload in the region, and is one of the biggest in the UK; in 2015 the department carried out over 14 million tests. The Laboratory is highly automated with the bulk of the analyses being performed on 8 tracked Abbott analysers along with two standalone analysers to provide urgent and paediatric analyses. There are, in addition, several automated analytical platforms delivering specialist endocrine and protein analysis. The laboratory offers a SupraRegional Assay and Advice Service for Calcium and Bone Metabolism markers and provides first trimester trisomy screening for Norfolk. Toxicology is well equipped with three HPLC/ MS, in addition to several other HPLC and GC analysers, and is currently replacing the existing atomic absorption equipment with ICP-MS.
The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is a 1000 bed Teaching Hospital with strong links with the University of East Anglia and many specialist clinical services (renal dialysis, hepatology, cardiac PPCI, oncology and haematology, autologous stem cell transplantation, ITU). It is situated on an attractive green field site a few miles outside the main city of Norwich, which is a vibrant attractive city with a great deal of history, although the countryside and coast are not far away.
