Dear List
Further to last week’s launch to the List of a three minute Systems Thinking in Healthcare video by my Design School colleague, Dr Thomas Jun, the School has another three minute video to share.
The Materials Thinking video captures an AHRC Global Challenges Research Fund project that I have recently completed with Dr Timothy Whitehead at Aston University in the UK and academic collaborators in Uganda (Kampala University), Kenya (University of Nairobi), Indonesia (Bandung Institute of Technology) and Turkey (Middle East Technical University). The project explores the use of industrial design to create and support supply chains in emerging economies with the aim of providing sustainable employment opportunities and wealth generation.
The approaches focus on the generation of proposals for contemporary, high value-added export products to be manufactured from indigenous materials that are readily available in some emerging economies. To demonstrate the approaches and use of materials, some of which might be described as non-typical in product design applications (e.g. Nile perch leather, gourd, bark cloth), the 39 proposals produced during the project have been translated into a card-based resource and distributed to all 146 countries on the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list that receive UK Official Development Assistance (ODA). A pdf version of the cards is also available on the project website at www.thinkingmaterials.net
The video is available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwsfSMvA4Vw and via the project website.
Thanks
Mark
