Friends, I am examining tool marks on boars' tusk fragments. Unfortunately, some specimens have post-depositional sandy concretions from the soil on the broken/worked surfaces and I cannot see them clearly. I am reluctant to use vinegar/acetic acid for fear that it could ruin the calcium-based mineral compound of the tooth enamel, and mechanical cleaning may introduce new tool marks. Anyone have experience in this sort of thing?
Also, while I have several refs on previous examinations of boars tusk helmets, I don't want to miss any if you know any from perhaps more obscure sources.
Thank you!
