Matters arising:
2.1 BRICMICS
Huw Thomas (NLW) updated the group on the British & Irish Committee on Map Information and Cataloguing Standards. The committee had agreed a new terms of reference following a change of officers on the committee following the retiral of Peter barber from the British Library who previously chaired the committee. It will review its membership and will re-launch with more of a focus on outreach and engagement with the wider map community.
The committee currently comprises representatives from the copyright libraries, the National Archives, Ordnance Survey, Ministry of Defence, Hydrographic Office, British Cartographic Society, Archives & Records Association, Society of Archivists, CILIP, commercial map publishers and Cartographiti.
2.2 MCG Toolbox & website
Anne Taylor (Cambridge University Library) requested the Group to contact her with updates or new material to include.
3. MAGIC
4. LIS-Maps
Clare Gordon (University of Leeds) list co-owner reported that the list is still working well with light traffic.
Thanks to Tinho and Clare for their continued work.
5. CARTOGRAPHITI
Tinho da Cruz, editor (University of Liverpool) has asked that map curators please send in reports and articles.
Action: All, keep sending map related articles to Cartographiti
6. TRAINING
A discussion about possible topics led to a general agreement that further trainings on map cataloguing, particularly using RDA and DCRM(C), would be welcome. This should include sources for downloading existing records as well as original cataloguing. Possible venues offered included Cambridge and Leeds.
7. MCG WORKSHOP 2017
It was generally agreed that the group would meet at the BCS symposium in 2017. There were concerns over the cost and possible inaccessibility by public transport of a conference hotel.
8. ANY OTHER BUSINESS
8.1 Forthcoming events:
Carton Cymric 2017. Symposium at the National Library of Wales, 12th May 2017.
Maps in the 20th century: drawing the line. Exhibition at the British Library from 4th November 2016.
8.2 Publications:
Treasures from the Map Room: A Journey through the Bodleian Collections / Edited by Debbie Hall. Published 9 September 2016.
The Red Atlas: How the Soviet Union Secretly Mapped the World, by John Davies & Alexander J Kent. To be published by University of Chicago Press in 2017.
8.3 IFLA
There was a discussion about the attendance of representatives of the Group at IFLA. It was felt that the expense of attending was off-putting and meant that experts at lower levels in organisations find it difficult to justify when only one session may be relevant.
