Hi Kate,
We don't have any 'reference' book groups in Torbay, just the traditional groups discussing contemporary novels. We stepped away from facilitating them a few years back and now expect the groups to be self-managing and self-directed. As for times, just allow the space to be used when we're closed on Thursdays afternoons - it's not what's best for them, it's just all we can manage.
Sorry I can't be much more help this time.
Hope all's well
John

Subject: Reference Reading Groups
Hi,
I manage the Somerset Studies Library, which is the local history collection for the county. It is a reference library, no borrowing, including both fiction and non-fiction. I feel that reader development is an area in which we lack, but I think I am too stuck in the traditional view of what a book group 'looks like'.
My question is: does anyone run a book group for such a library, and if so, could you let me know the following?
What are the challenges of having a book group when you can't lend the books?
How do you chose titles and make them available to members?
How many members do you generally get and what are the demographics?
What have been the best times of day/days of the week and why?
What titles/subjects work best?
How much development time does it take to prep each meeting?
What format for the meeting works best? (questions lead by yourself, general discussion, round-robin etc) Do you incorporate social media as part/whole of your meetings?
Turns out I had more questions than I thought!
Many thanks,
Kate Parr
