UWI & Caribbean Action 2030
The 17 SDGs addressed at Caribbean Action 2030
On June 28-30 more than 200 delegates, including high-level ministers and technical experts from 18 Caribbean countries, met to advance and accelerate regional action for eliminating extreme poverty, reducing inequality, and protecting the planet. It is projected that “Caribbean Action 2030” will evolve into a movement in the post-conference period to encourage information sharing advocacy and highlighting best practices, challenges and solutions in SDG implementation in the region.
This meeting on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was hosted by the Jamaican Government in partnership with The University of the West Indies and the meeting funder, the United Nations. The 17 SDGs, commonly known around the globe as Agenda 2030, formed the main agenda items at the Caribbean Action 2030: Regional Conference on the Sustainable Development Goals, where the delegates sought to advance regional action in the areas of resources mobilisation, civil society participation, strong evidence base for policy and capacity building. Professor The Hon. Elsa Leo-Rhynie, Professor Emerita of The University of the West Indies (UWI) was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal by Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne at a ceremony at the UWI Regional Headquarters on Friday, June 23, 2017.
The Chancellor’s Medal is a special award of distinction made by The UWI Chancellor to a person who “has made a signal, substantial and likely lasting contribution to the welfare and development of The UWI, in the spirit of the CARICOM Heads of Government Declaration of Grande Anse which formally identified the leadership of The UWI in tertiary education and decided that its regional character should be preserved indefinitely for the preparation of skills and advancement of knowledge needed for the growth and development of the Caribbean region.”

This programme aims to engage current students with alumni globally, to seek assistance via up-to-date professional and academic advice and allows alumni from all over the world to participate. E-Mentorship allows both the Mentor and Mentee to have short, targeted interchanges, which allows the E-Mentor to feel involved and that he/she is contributing; and the E-Mentee to receive valuable information while recognising the involvement of alumni. E-Mentorship is easy as it is done via email.
This programme will NOT replace the one-to-one Mentoring Programmes offered at The UWI campuses since that features a different kind of counseling and fulfills a different need. The Philip Sherlock Centre is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary. Located on the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies, the performing arts centre is considered as the epicentre of all things cultural on the campus. The activities to celebrate the milestone occasion were launched on Sunday, the actual date of the anniversary. The first production - the Marat/Sade - directed by Noel Vaz, was staged in the centre's unfinished building on June 25, 1967.
