Dear all,
I arrive late for the discussion but would nonetheless like to leave the
link to a lecture by Roger Scruton entitled “The True, the Good and the
Beautiful.”
In this lecture, the English author argues (the very Greek argument) that
beauty is a virtue as fundamental for human life as truth and goodness.
Towards the end of the lecture, the author claims that “through the pursuit
of beauty we shape the world as a home, and in doing so we both amplify our
joys and find consolation for our sorrows”.
I find the phrase “through the pursuit of beauty we shape the world as a
home” particularly applicable to design, after all, design is the
discipline that imagines the world as it might be, that creates the
artificial surroundings in which we dwell.
Designers should be as concerned with beauty as lawyers are concerned with
truth.
