It’s been a few years since I looked at it but Uri Bram’s 'Thinking Statistically' is a start. It doesn’t try to take you through classroom exercises but it gets you past the "Huh? What are they talking about?" stage for some basic stats stuff. It’s very short, quite accessible, and fairly cheap ($10US paperback;$5US e-book.)
