Dear All,
After sending my note yesterday on “how to write” resources, I realized that it might be helpful info you about a valuable online writing and editing tool — Grammarly.
https://www.grammarly.com
I often suggest that authors use Grammarly. I use it myself.
Grammarly maintains an online web site for subscribers. While there is a free version, I subscribe to the professional version. It does more work, and it is easily tailored to my needs. I use it for my own writing as a last check before sending off documents, and I often use it when copy editing articles or advising others. Authors can set the style or genre to help tailor a document to your intended purpose: the default mode is general. You can also choose among academic, business, and technical modes, as well as medical, creative, or casual.
You can work with manuscripts in several ways, and it is easy to import full manuscripts into Grammarly. Despite this, I find it most helpful to paste text into Grammarly on a paragraph by paragraph basis.
Grammarly does not rewrite the text. Rather, it flags problems, often making useful suggestions. Author must adjust, revise, and rewrite in response to suggestions until the text is in good shape. This is visible in document statistics and in the fact that the app stops flagging problems.
The one area where Grammarly may be difficult for some authors is that it identifies cases where an author uses the same word or phrase often. In academic writing, it is sometimes necessary to repeat precise terms. This requires a judgement call to accept a define problem. Other than this, however, Grammarly is a great help. It also contains a plagiarism checker, another useful tool for academics, scholars, and scientists.
In the past, I often used the built-in editing and checking features of Microsoft Word. They were a help, but Grammarly is easier and far more powerful.
I recommend it highly.
Yours,
Ken
