Assistant Professor in Residence in Political Ecology/Environmental
Sociology/Design Studies (Term Appointment), The Rhode Island School of
Design
The Department of History, Philosophy and the Social Sciences (HPSS) at
the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) invites applications for a one
year term appointment of an Assistant Professor in Residence in Political
Ecology/Design Studies starting in fall of 2017. The suitable candidate
will have undergraduate teaching experience and a broad background in
Political Ecology/Urban Political Ecology, Environmental
Sociology/Geography/Politics. An interest in the overlapping fields of
Design Studies/the sociology/geographies/politics of design and future
studies/sustainable futures would be an advantage. Candidates should have a
Ph.D in an appropriate field of the environmental social sciences
(Geography/Sociology/Political Science/Inter-disciplinary Studies),
however, late stage Ph.D candidates may be considered. Full-time faculty
teach 6 courses a year at RISD; in HPSS, these are typically two seminar
classes (15 students), two introductory classes (21 students) and two
lecture classes (30 students).
HPSS (http://www.risd.edu/academics/hpss/) is a multidisciplinary
department within the Division of Liberal Arts. Our students are art and
design majors who take one third of their courses in the Liberal Arts. For
those interested, RISD offers unique opportunities for collaborative
research and teaching with faculty and students in art and design
disciplines (e.g., industrial design, apparel, textiles, architecture,
film, etc.).
Please submit a C.V. and cover letter that speaks to your interest in RISD
and outlines your teaching experience to Professor Jennifer
Prewitt-Freilino *[log in to unmask] <[log in to unmask]>*. Review of
applications will begin June 1st and will continue until the position is
filled.
As a matter of policy, RISD does not sponsor H/O employment visas for term
appointments or new adjunct faculty. Some international applicants from
abroad may be eligible for a RISD-sponsored Exchange Visitor's J1 visa if
they are not subject to the two-year home rule due to prior F or J visas.
Qualified Mexican or Canadian nationals may be eligible for a
RISD-supported TN visa.
RISD is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage applications from
candidates who will enrich and contribute to the cultural and ethnic
diversity of our College. RISD does not discriminate on the basis of race,
color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, veteran status,
sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, genetics, or any other
protected characteristic as established by law.
