Jean-Herve: Swan hunting in Great Britain dates back to at least the first
century A.D.: see the Vindolanda Tablets translations, which bring to
light that the Commandant of the fort in around 90 A.D. was asking that
when his best buddy next came to visit him, that he bring along some new
nets for swanning.
I also reported swan excavated from Vindolanda levels of this time period:
see the references below. Long and short, swan hunting as a nobleman's or
army officer's pursuit long antedates the Middle Ages.
