Hi Vera,
Even if it may be true that grammar checkers don’t work properly there are more functions which such tools have. For a comparative review on the functions of 10 different writing enhancement softwares you may check here:

Subject: Re: Recommendation for grammar/spell check software
Vera’s PhD student, who wanted a tool that would correct her grammar mistakes for her, now has a range of options at her disposal, including those that correct both her grammar and her style.
She should, however, be clear that her work is being corrected by computers, not humans, but also by computers that have been programmed by humans with particular agendas which may be culturally bound and quite often prescriptive. MS Word, for example, dislikes passives because it is from the US, and Americans (from the US at least) tend to dislike passives, while the British by and large are rather fond of them. It also tells us that we may not use “which” without a comma preceding it – because in the US (it seems) all defining clauses must have “that” while all non-defining clauses must have “which.” Many students who do not have English as their first language mislearn this rule, and assume that there is no such thing as a defining clause, changing all their instances to non-defining.
Similarly, many style checking programmes reflect the personal prescriptive preferences of their makers (c.f. Helen Sword’s online supplement to her book Stylish Academic Writing). While professors of English literature do mostly tend to converge in these preferences, their preferences do not always match those of academics in other disciplines. They are also exactly that: preferences, not facts, filtered through the idiocy of a machine. I have tried one or two of these style checkers and the results range from unhelpful to laughable.
We as writing professionals are of course expensive, but writers are often better served when they get help from us than when they get it from computers.
John

Hello, all. The site recommended by Peter provides less grammar and style feedback than does MSWord. For some reason, students are either not finding the MSWord tool useful or they are finding sites like the one Peter recommends more user-friendly.
Best regards, Lawrence

Hi Fiona,
Another tool that might be useful is http://www.readingandwritingtools.com/mm/markingmate.html. It's an essay analyser which could be useful as it looks at both language and academic style. As with all essay checkers it needs to be approached with a substantial pinch of salt but students I've used it with have found it useful, particularly when it comes to checking register or over-reliance on certain language items.
Best regards,
Peter

Some of our students have found the free site called grammarly.com<http://grammarly.com> to be useful, partly because the explanations accompanying errors and suggestions are fairly clear.

Subject: Recommendation for grammar/spell check software
Dear colleagues,
I’ve just received this request from a PhD student, a former workshop participant of mine:
I do write a lot in rush and I can really use a decent grammar check software that goes beyond what MS Word provides. Do you happen to have any recommendation?
Every suggestion, including absolute don’ts, would be appreciated.
Best wishes
Vera
