Dear Ken,
I’ve been out for the weekend.
We were discussing Design Education. There are several roots in Design Education (Both from Design and Education). You identified three: Guilds, Studios and Academies and suggested a few more. Let’s keep these three.
I proposed that the most relevant of these for Design PhDs were Academies (Early Modern and Modern). Now you are asking for more. I’ll get to that soon.
First let me answer you why Academies? the answer is simple: Books.
Academics used to write books on subjects relevant for their Academy. Some of those books were called Treatises, others compendiums, sometimes anthologies and others dictionaries, others simply “book”. Also, in Academies, books by non academics were read and organized in Libraries, notably organized by subjects relevant for the Academy, stored along with the books by Academics. Also, academies kept annales, regular publication of research articles by their members or distinguished students.
Does this sound familiar?
Best,
Eduardo

My first assertion is that it is impossible to build doctoral education for a PhD, the research doctorate on the base of undergraduate and postgraduate studio education in the tradition of the academies and the artisan craft guilds because Academies were the opposite of artisan craft guilds.

How, in your view, it is possible to build doctoral education for a PhD, the research doctorate, on the base of undergraduate and postgraduate studio education in the tradition of the academies and the artisan craft guilds?
