Hi Ryan,
Co-variates are typically all the independent variables that you have in
the model.The two terms are used synonymously in most social sciences. Some
of your co-variates may be controls, some maybe actual variables of
interest and so on. There is a lot of confusion about these terms and there
are slight differences in how people use these terms , for example see:
