Dear Dr. Russell,
*-snip-Reactions are sometimes good*
*-snip-*
I'm drawn to add that reactions may also be intelligence; as part of the
underlying intelligence evidenced in the sprouting of a seed, or the
coagulation around a wound; expanded to the fight/flight systems. An
extension perhaps of the tendency of life to preserve itself through tacit
knowledge that emerges automatically in similar progressing situations.
It is. possibly the same intelligence that is behind the reset phenomenon
you described earlier that balances, after a heightened moment, the loss of
members on the list with a gain in increased participation from previously
mostly silent ones. In a way, it appears that such intelligence will always
help to inform and integrate into acquired skills that make future
reactions, better (or better informed) reactions.
*-snip-Much of the reaction flurry of our social lives is designed to stop
us seeing and being seen.... Easier to see a butterfly than the soul of
another.*
*-snip-*
The value of open attention perhaps arises when through the intention of
creative expansion or innovation, contexts are designed so that balance can
be reached deliberately and thus reduce unwanted loss in a system. If
stopping is not always the very best option, presence could enhance the
tendency to stop at the red light with an awareness of the distance and
speed of the car behind, and maybe even some sense of the activity
happening at the crossroads ahead.
It could be said that the value of presence is not as a substitute to
reactions, but as a skilled relationship with the inevitability of tacit
knowledge arising.
This, of course, could present a balancing challenge if (for example)
lifespans are increased to a 300-year average. One would hope that a well
developed skill of mindful awareness can promote considering more
perspectives when designing systems to (for example) increase a sense of
community membership on this list, would consider the possibility of having
to manage increasing numbers of, and approaches to posts to the list,
rapidly growing membership, and higher percentages of members participating
simultaneously.
Best wishes,
Fernando Rojas
