Dear all,
As some of you know, I am writing a book about sketching. A great number of you participated on the survey I was running to collect current beliefs about sketching in education and practice. I want to share that I have collected 310 responses so far between professionals, educators, and students. Which is great! So, thank you, thank you for all of your help!
I have a few questions and I was hoping to find some direction from the group, if you don’t mind.
Here are the questions:
I am interested in making a connection between handwriting, drawing, lettering, calligraphy, and sketching. I wonder if the mental processes are the same or at least related? I am also wondering if because these use the arm and the hand as the main tool, there could be more connections between them? What is the link, if any? I am not looking into making a differentiation between a tablet and paper. I think technology has come far enough to breach that gap fairly successfully. Any literature I can read or if you know someone I can contact?
The fields of architecture and fashion design seem to teach students to sketch in a certain way. In other words there is a very distinctive visual language in each of these disciplines. However, for example, graphic designers are not taught to sketch in a certain way. I am wondering what are your thoughts on that? I would like to see at least a course where we teach students to simply sketch their ideas. Sketchnoting has taken the designers’ world by storm and nowadays we see sketchnoting being not only used in any context, but elevated by UX and UI designers such as Eva Lotta-Lam, who advocates it as a vital part of her process.
I would like to interview fashion designers, shoe designers, animation designers, industrial designers, and architects to gain insight in their process and style. I was wondering if you guys know some designers in these areas who can provide with insights?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Alma
