Dear Lois,
This is timely for me, because I've recently completed my MDes degree study of how to develop deeper understanding of user needs for design research and improve design research pedagogy. I come from a background in anthropology, but I've been wanting to better understand design research, particularly in light of interdisciplinary approaches that involve design.
As a newly minted design anthropologist, I want to explore how design and anthropology methods can be better combined and how we can foster a mutually productive relationship between our disciplines, as we both seek to better understand those communities and individuals we work with. I want to better understand how 'design research' functions, both in the academy and in practice, and how we can evaluate the effectiveness of different qualitative research approaches for improving design outcomes.
Another area that I want to explore in an interdisciplinary fashion is that of Indigenous pedagogies (where the emphasis is on context dependent learning that embraces cultural teaching as part of the curriculum) and how they can intersect with Western pedagogies through project based learning and 'design learning' for education. Land based education programs are starting to pop up in non-Indigenous programs, and I'm curious about how much these things can overlap.
I consider my 'home discipline' to be anthropology, but I've always been someone who 'bounces around' between areas of interest and borrows widely from various disciplines to make sense of things. The more I've learned about design the more I am intrigued by the power of visual and physical communication (sketching and prototyping, among others) and what that could contribute to other disciplines.
These thoughts are rough right now, but I'm hoping to develop clearer ones over the next few months as I work with others in our department and carry out more research. I've been pretty quiet on this list while I've been chugging through my studies, but I'm going to contribute more to the discussion in the months ahead - thank you all for keeping things interesting.

Dear Lois
Many thanks for this.
I describe my 'home discipline' as architecture, and work with others in
directly related disciplines such as design (of many flavours) and fine art
(also of many flavours). At a greater distance, I have worked closely with
colleagues from health field on research projects for a number of years.
One of my main research areas is assessment approaches for
interdisciplinary education involving the creative disciplines ... Multiple
Measures, a recent project funded by the Australian Office for Learning and
Teaching can be found at http://multiplemeasures.org.au/ ... It produced a
library of approaches and bespoke search and benchmarking tool
It would be terrific to make contact with colleagues who are interested in
interdisciplinary education research, especially with a view to focussed
research events in Europe in mid 2017 that will build on the Multiple
Measures project.
Best wishes
Kate
