Partially closing the college this year for the first Maths exam - the 2nd paper and English paper fall in our reading weeks so are sort of manageable. We are currently at 58 rooms required which we should be able to manage. Have no idea how my pool of 24 invigilators are going to cover this though. A carefully worded e.mail from SMT is supposed to have gone out requesting help but I haven't seen it yet.

Hi Victoria

We do the following:

- cancel all classes that we possibly can to free up rooms and staff for invigilating etc

- work with Learning Support to see which students who have an EAA in place can share readers or share separate rooms

- work with our IT Department to ensure they are given plenty of notice for hooking up printers to WPs

- ensure our Premises team are aware of all our needs so that rooms can be set up appropriately

We have very little in terms of large spaces (oh for a sports hall) - our biggest area sits 50 so we are the same and have to use multiple classrooms and offices. Additionally, we run cloakrooms on each floor for coats/bags/'phones - these have to be staffed as well of course in addition to roaming invigilators (we call them runners).

I think the answer is that you can't start planning early enough. Good luck! :-)

Subject: Accommodating access arrangements on GCSE days

Hi all

This year we have very large numbers for GCSE English and Maths, and access arrangements have also gone through the roof.

As an example for GCSE English we have 973 learners entered, 249 or 26% of which have access arrangements (with many more in the pipeline). As it stands we will need 79 rooms just for separate rooms and shared readers, this doesn't include students without access arrangements, or those with extra time, rest breaks, word processors etc. At present 86 require a word processor.

We are understandably really struggling to accommodate these numbers of access arrangements, please can I ask if any other large centres are experiencing similar, and if so what measures are you taking to address this?

Thank you so much, your responses would be much appreciated.
