I want to stay on this list, I know a good discussion group when I find
one.

This announced departure method is a common development on discussion
groups, particularly academic lists that fcous on a specific subject area
like this one. I have seen this development on many discussion groups over
time. This list is made up of many scholars and teachers with high levels
of learning and skills. Listserv has a very simple method that can be used
to quietly terminate ones membership that is found on the website for this
list found at this address.

I am certain that the folks who post these messages have mastered far more
complex and difficult tasks in gaining their education up to and including
the doctorate degree and in pursing careers in academic or professional
fields.

Instead, these folk choose to post a demand to leave the list as a form of
censorship that says to the membership, "if you do not post only what I
want to read, I will leave this list and let all of you know about it."

I have seen this behavior on quite a few academic and professional lists
and almost always when a controversial topic becomes widely discussed on
these discussion groups. Since this group over the years has shared many
posts from which the readers have huge learning opportunities, this is an
excellent and powerful list, the exercise in censorship these persons
employ untimately hurts the departers as they lose future learning
opportunites. I always wonder why people cannot simply delete these
unliked messages unread and wait until the sun comes out with posts that
they like better as this like everything else will pass. I personnally
have posted on my own discussion group network about the Republican party,
but have not posted any of this here as I know exactly what would happen
if I did. When I took over the Sport-Med list on JISC in 2009 and posted
messages about research skills and most recently about plagiarism, I had
early on this type of feedback. It did die rather quickly, however.

Another factor I have noticed over the years from the I am leaving this
list crowd is that many of these departers never post content to these
lists. This may also explain why they elect to announce departure rather
than posting comments about what the list content should or should not be.

There are times when world events and their impacts on academic research
and publishing rightly cause academic groups to stray from their specific
focus and this is fine and important. Members of such groups will deal
with this change in a variety of ways, both negative and positive, but it
is going to happen that digression occurs on many such lists. Tolerance is
a virtue and dealing with it professionally is another virtue. Protesting
this development by leaving the list with a demand to be taken off the
list is neither a virtue or a way of showing ones knowledge of how lists
work. Also those who want to share a great deal more of content off topic
to this list can create publically archived websites on Google Sites,
discussion groups on free services like Groups.IO, and with blogs on
services like Wordpress, which also has a free version. Google will index
selectively all of the above, how Google indexes the web is another long
topic of discussion. <g>
