This is my first time writing here.
I guess Azza, that you are starting from the point of view of Viktor
Papanek' Design for the real world. Which is an interesting way of
conceptualizing the aims of Design. Yet I think the use of the wording
"social" and "design" can be a bit problematic, as the design intention is
not actually creating any new social connections, but rather technological
innovations that are usually made according to the pre existent social and
economical conditions of a human group to whom the designer designs for.
So, I think a better approach is the one of design for social innovation
(or social change) which sets the intervention of the social layer as a
goal. I think, that as designers we can work better from that perspective.
Maybe you would like to read Ezio Manzini's book Design, When everybody
designs. I guess this topic will be very important in the decade to come,
hopefully more discussion about it will also led to redefine Design as a
practice.
