Dear Marje
You'll probably find that practice varies within the UK. But, at my University (Newcastle), we don't allow this for Linguistics PhDs. Linguistics PhD theses must form a single narrative on a single theme.
All the best

Dear teach-lingers,
We are currently exploring what is current practice in linguistics at different UK universities to allow PhD students to write a dissertation
as a collection of publishable/published articles (not to be confused with a "PhD by publication").
We know that other countries and disciplines (e.g., psychology) do so, but were wondering what UK linguistics departments do.
What we know from other disciplines is a format like the following:
Chapter 1: Overarching literature review
Chapter 2: Explanatory chapter explaining links between the following
chapters/articles
Chapter 3,4,5: published/publishable articles
Chapter 6: Overarching discussion, conclusion and so on
Would those of you who do have regulations in place and who are happy to share them, send them to me: [log in to unmask] (not the teach ling
list)? I will collate answers and send a bundled follow-up early next week to share the pooled knowledge.
Many thanks and kind regards,
Marije Michel
