Clément -
It's complicated (!) ... But there are some basic truths.
- What we're talking about in this thread is indeed probably what is called a _mémoire_ in French. It's usually 6,000 to 8,000 words long and is written in the final year of your undergraduate degree. It can be compulsory, or not, depending on the university.
- Depending on where you are in the English-speaking world, this thing can go under different names. So, in the UK, even within one institution (mine) you can see this undergraduate long-form piece of work called either a Dissertation or an Extended Essay, depending on who it's being done for. There are doubtless other names too.
- In the UK, we call what you write for your PhD a thesis.
- In the USA, these two names are usually reversed. So what you write during your undergraduate or Master's degree in the US is usually called a thesis, and what you write for your PhD is called a dissertation.
Hope that helps ... :-)

Hi all,
Just to clarify, what is called dissertation in English is called mémoire in french, right ?
Because in France, the word dissertation means an essay that you write when in examination, where the memoire is written at home, like a small PhD thesis.
Graduate students do not have the necessity of a memoire in France, it depends if their master degree is "profressionnel" or "recherche"qualified. In the first one, they have to validate with a internship and the report of it. The second option needs a memoire, between 60 to 150 pages, whether it's theoretical or practical.
