Hi Gunnar,
good to hear from you.
I think we have to step away from the specificities of the recent
exchange between particular men and particular women you describe and
to which Don reacted and consider what constitutes 'behaving badly' in
systemic institutional ways, over time, using a kind of gang mentality
that has deep and lasting impacts on those who offer alternative
views. And consider on whose terms, in what contexts, and who gets to
decide good/bad behaviour in academic debate. This is the question I
was posing to Don.
I posted some years ago about the adversarial nature of academic
debate, and Carmen's recent post (thank you) offers options for how to
approach online exchanges that may offend.
So, for those inclined, let's have a (not 'rational' and not
hysterical – there are positions in between) discussion about
gendered, raced and classed relational dynamics in academia, of which
this list is a microcosm.
all the best, teena

Teena,
(First, in case anyone reads the exchange and thinks Don’s use of
the phrase "self-defined feminist" was rhetorical overload, I should
note that it was another typo: Luiza Prado titles herself "SelfDefined
Feminist" on Twitter which is, no doubt, why he used that phrase.)
I fully understand what led Don to respond as he did to the tweets but
I’m afraid it probably made people who had only seen Ms. Prado’s
claims more convinced that she is a victim of harassment. (I hope my
struggle to ignore the urge for mockery on this subject has been, and
will continue to be, successful. If not, I preemptively apologize for
my failure.)
