Dear Ursula,
patronising I think is the word you are looking for. It is often a gender thing. It is personal. And it does discourage people posting. Not out of fear, but because it doesn’t seem to change much, despite the many, many times it has been raised in the more than 12 years I have been subscribed to this list.
Johann, personal views are very much allowed in research – they are often the basis for very good research questions and projects. And I do have empirical data to support my views – if you are so inclined, have a look at my doctoral dissertation.
As Terry Threadgold has said, gender will always need doing, again and again. Not quite in those words.
all the best,
teena
> In this list there are not few but quite some male academics that have a way of trying to discredit contributions of women (but not only women) in a way and a style that is rude and arrogant, at the same time ignorant and feels like they cannot accept that maybe some other people with different cultural backgrounds (and different sexes) could have a point of view and a wisdom that is against everything that they learned, have thought so far, their dominant values and believes.
