Dear Mike,
President is a position. Not a person. There is no way any person can be a position. Hence, society is psychotic in as much as it grants respect to people that hold positions because they hold a position. Mostly we can't be bothered making such distinctions and so we avoid either respecting or disrespecting by being civil. When we bother to make the distinction, by way of showing contempt, we are drawing attention to the psychosis in hope, perhaps, to reveal something. A blanket condemnation of such contempt disguises what we might reveal. So, I don't mind people being contemptuous of my various positions because I don't disguise the gap between myself and my positions of authority. What is then revealed is things like my genuine authority (as an author of an idea or a teaching or an observation etc.) or my lack of authority. Since I am only interested in the knowledge component of the transaction, I get satisfaction, no matter what. This is, of course, a psychotic approach to social transactions but then that is my primary apprehension of social reality. Mostly I am not here or there or anywhere. Where am I? Usually about 6 inches behind my body.
Cheers
Keith
