I hope no one takes sides but continue to address the issues raised.
Modernity is masculine. There are no villains, only victims. difficult
to digest but the nature of modernity is ego boosting!
Feminism is a masculine response by women fragmented by modernity as
it is again addressing the issue by fragmenting.
Don't get angry. Stay with me for a while.....
Modernity can only produce fragmented people with masculine quality.
Exclusion is its nature. Inclusion happens only on the terms of
modernity. You become masculine and you will be included.
I would say both sides are resorting to masculine response. (One could
also replace the words masculine and feminine with yin and yang if
that feels better). In the Indian context there is a term -
ardha-nari- eswara- which means half women half man and our potential
is to have this balance for both men and women (these are two types of
qualities seemingly opposite but come together to form life). This
balance is only a potential as its formation depends on the way we are
formed in our childhood. Both fragmentation and being holistic is not
within our choice or control but is determined by the condition/
context in our childhood.
I feel the most crucial study needs to be done regarding the formation
of mind and the conditions within which this happens. I have been
studying this (no book was ever referred for the study) from 30 years
living with rural people as I see the problem of fragmentation among
the so called educated and not among the non literates.
Mind formed body happens in modernity where as body formed mind
happens in tradition. In non literate communities children learn the
world autonomously and they trust the world and live in freedom which
is the existential condition of non literate communities. I am again
and again saying this only because it is worth studying the non
literate people on their terms and with total respect.
So what matters is how the mind is formed which determines how we are
located in the world, how we treat the world and how we relate to the
world.
This determines our cognitive system- tools, process, structure and
source- whether it is autonomously developed or by instruction and
control.
Modernity can be defined as the 'beingness' that got formed due to
mediated learning rather than direct knowing, by using the mind rather
than the whole being, by engaging with the description rather than the
described.
This means the WORLD is replaced with the WORD, Experience is replaced
with reading and thinking and the senses are replaced with the mind
causing a fundamental rewiring of the cognitive tools, cognitive
process and the cognitive source.
Learning is a word that got prominence due to the reduction of a total
process in which the total being is formed. In fact the word formation
would be a more accurate word to describe what is happening to the
child because the child automatically absorbs and imbibes the totality
of the experience.
Senses give information to the mind which hold them as it is and the
self organizing capacity organizes this input and gives it back to
mind to function.
What modernity takes away is the self organizing capacity by using
conscious reasoning.
Fragmentation is not a choice but every one born into the modernity
will be fragmented. Even though all children are born with potential
to grow/ develop/ evolve/ awaken holistically the conditions into
which they are born into dictate their fate. Modernity is the
condition that produces fragmented, compartmentalized, rational
(conscious reason as the basic operating principle), linear,
anthropocentric humans who are preoccupied with words.
Mind has a way of appropriating very insidiously. take for example the
notions of embodied knowledge. If one is getting all the 'ideas' from
books then what is embodied knowledge? Are we talking about this as a
result of body informing the mind or is it only another mind game.
This is the same case with phenomenology etc which has tried to
address the problems of modernity.
